What is the Difference Between Coaching and Mentoring?

The main difference is this: a mentor guides you based on their own experience and gives advice from what worked for them. A coach does not give advice. A coach helps you find your own answers through structured questioning, deep listening and a process designed to access the guidance already within you.

Mentoring is relational and experience-led. A mentor has usually walked a similar path already, often in the same field or career, and shares what they learned along the way. Coaching is process-led. A coach does not need to have lived your exact situation. Their skill is in the questions they ask, not the advice they give.

The problem with mentoring vs Coaching is that a mentor will guide you on the direct path and steps to take - whereas a life coach will help you find your way to the goal.

Mentoring: Guidance From Someone Who Has Done It Before

A mentor is typically someone further along a specific path than you, a senior colleague, an industry expert, someone who has built the career or life you are working toward. Mentoring often happens informally, and the value comes from the mentor's own experience, contacts and lessons learned.

Mentoring works well when you want to learn from someone who has already solved the exact problem you are facing. Coaching is better if you have your own goals, and want to find the best way for you to reach them.

Coaching: A Structured Process That Draws Out Your Own Answers

Coaching is a structured process of directed enquiry, deep listening and powerful questioning. It does not rely on the coach's own life experience matching yours. Instead, a coach helps you dig deep, access the guidance within, and create a life or path that is uniquely your own, not modelled on someone else's journey.

A coach's skill lies in their ability to raise awareness, highlight patterns, help you think creatively and find the best way forward for you.

Coaching works well when the answer is not "copy what someone else did," but "find out who you are and where you actually want to go."

Which One Do You Need?

If you want direct advice from someone who has already achieved the specific outcome you want, mentoring may be the right fit. If you want to work out your own direction, values and next steps through guided questioning rather than being told what to do, coaching is the better fit.

Many people benefit from both at different points, a mentor for domain-specific guidance, and a coach for the deeper work of designing a life and identity that is authentically their own.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between coaching and mentoring?

A mentor gives advice based on their own experience. A coach does not give advice, and instead uses structured questioning and deep listening to help you find your own answers.

Do I need a mentor or a coach?

If you want guidance from someone who has already achieved your specific goal, choose a mentor. If you want to work out your own direction and values through guided questioning, choose a coach.

Can a coach also be a mentor?

Yes, but the two roles work differently. Mentoring shares the mentor's own path. Coaching draws out the client's own path, without relying on the coach's personal experience as the template.
