Yes, EMDR is highly effective for professionals. While traditionally used for trauma, clinical evidence shows it quickly resolves common workplace challenges. Specifically, EMDR helps with performance anxiety, presentation anxiety, imposter syndrome, burnout and workplace FOMO. Nina Madden, experienced EMDR therapist based in Kensington, London explains:
EMDR is a well-researched trauma treatment originally developed for PTSD in the US and the treatment of war veterans. It has since been found effective for a wide range of issues.
As an EMDR Therapist with years in private practice, I work frequently with young, ambitious professionals helping them progress in their careers. You don't have to have trauma to benefit from EMDR.
EMDR is Good for Professional Context
Do you have a boss or manager that triggers you? Do you feel stressed out when an email drops into your inbox, or you see a colleague advance ahead of you, or you see that meeting where you are meant to present be scheduled in the diary?
EMDR is not just for major life events but is effective on day-to-day triggers, anxiety and feelings in the workplace.
What EMDR Therapy Can Help With at Work
I see professionals in my practice for the following:
- Performance anxiety. Presentations are part of the job, but you feel your heart racing, dizziness, you get red and your hands shake. EMDR has been proven very effective for performance and presentation anxiety.
- FOMO: feelings of being left behind. Your colleague gets the promotion or moves to that hot new company that everyone wants to work for, and you didn't make the cut. EMDR can process the underlying feelings of not being good enough that lead to comparison and FOMO very effectively.
- Imposter syndrome. You know you've earnt your position but have a niggling underlying sense that you're going to be exposed, found out to be incompetent.
- Burnout, and high-achievement and perfectionism. You panic when things aren't perfect, and you keep at it until late into the night. People are warning you, you know, but you "have to get it done."
How EMDR Works
In the beginning we set out a treatment plan.
Not every client wants to delve into their deepest darkest traumas, and you may just want to fix these issues so that you can feel better, achieve more, have better relationships at work and advance with your career.
But if you do want to dive into the darker sides of your trauma, I offer an unshakeable non-judgemental space to process the worst events and experiences you have had.
The EMDR therapy process uses bilateral stimulus coupled by rigorous therapeutic protocols that allow triggers to be reprocessed. The effect is a lowering of the nervous system activation, a consolidation of the trigger event and an easier, freer sense of self.
In complex trauma cases these day-to-day triggers are often gateways into traumas from the past, and if you wish to process these, I am here for you.
The EMDR processing-phase of the trigger or the original event results in lowering of the activation, desensitisation and a much lighter and objective sense of the reality.
Most people feel lighter and clearer after an EMDR session.
How Long Does EMDR Take for Performance Anxiety, Presentation Anxiety and General Work-Place Triggers?
I recommend starting with six sessions for the type of issues we have looked at above but often these kinds of issues need less.
